A NEW BEGINNING

A New Beginning

By Thaddeus "Jackson" Layne

The boys JV soccer team has hired current University of Redlands goalkeeper Seth Lawrence as their new head coach.

Seth Lawrence is no stranger to the city of Redlands, he grew up in Redlands and went to RHS for his freshman year. After his freshman year, Lawrence moved to Colorado by himself to play with the Colorado Rapids DA (Developmental Academy) for three years. Following his senior year, Lawrence decided to play for the University of Redlands where he is entering his fourth year.

When asked why he wanted to coach at RHS, Coach Lawrence said, “I took the RHS coaching job because I thought it would be a great opportunity for me to share some of my knowledge of the game, and to work alongside the Varsity coach, Coach Gio Napoletano.” Coach Gio has known Seth for many years from previously coaching him when he was younger to being the goalkeeper coach for the U of R.

Coach Lawrence says he likes coaching because “I can relate very easily with my players and their issues. I think getting a feel for coaching at such a young age will be very helpful when I am older.” Respect goes both ways in coaching, and by being relatable to his players, Coach Lawrence is sure to gain some.

Coaching a young team is definitely challenging, however Coach Lawrence recognized his players for their “willingness to learn” and how they have “made me feel completely respected.” His main priority is to have a valuable mindset and mentality on and off the field. When asked what mentality he wants his team to play with, Coach Lawrence said, “I want my players to always play with confidence and to be able to adapt to different playing styles.”

Every team and coach has a reason they do what they do and for Coach Lawrence, it’s pride. He said, “There is a certain pride for my school, and pride for my hometown that comes with wanting to help this team be the best it can be.” The boys JV soccer team is off to a promising 1-1 start, hoping to continue growing as players and young men.

A star athlete on the basketball team: Colin Jackson

By Dayna Anderson

Colin Jackson, a senior and team captain of the basketball team at Redlands High School, has brought a lot to his team and teammates through his playing. He’s been on the Varsity team for three years now, and is always working to get better, showing his grit, motivation, and determination.

Jackson has been playing since elementary school, and has had passion for basketball even from such a young age. He shares that he first learned how to play by, “just looking up videos on Youtube, like how to shoot and stuff, and then just practicing pretty much every day”. Practicing has become an almost daily habit for him, and the hard work can be seen when he’s on the court, but it does come at a price. Even without any other extracurriculars, basketball can leave very little time for other activities during the day.

He says, “ It takes like a lot of time out of your day, just going, trying to play better ‘cause there’s some stuff you can’t do, and you have to practice”. Dedicating to that amount of time comes with a lot of motivation. Jackson says that his brother and parents are his biggest supporters, always keeping him motivated and giving him encouragement.

As for inspiration, he mentions Stephen Curry, a famous basketball player from the Golden State Warriors, as one of his biggest inspirational figures. Jackson says, “When I first started playing basketball, Steph Curry inspired me a lot just ‘cause he’s such a good shooter, so I kind of tried to play like him almost, or as far as shooting goes”.

As the team captain of the Varsity team, he enjoys being around his teammates, and helping them out. He says that his most important contribution to the team is, “Probably being the leader, since I’m like a senior and a returning player; just like motivating people and keeping our spirits up after we lose”. There are many great memories that he’s made with them; from funny moments during practices, to big wins during games.

The biggest of those wins, in Jackson’s opinion, was when they beat Redlands East Valley High School last year. He recounts, “when we beat REV last year, it was like a really competitive game. It was an away game so it was hard; the crowd was really loud, but we came through and we won.”

As he continues his last year, he thinks about what he wants to do with his passion for the sport after high school. He intends to play in college and try to find a team afterwards. For him, basketball is something that he won't stop following anytime soon. He will always be practicing and improving.

“I just want to get better and go as far as I can at basketball.”

RHS football wins nail biting smudge pot game

By Caden Henderson

The annual Smudge Pot game took place October 20th, and it was a thriller. The game went back and forth all night, with RHS coming out on top 20-19 thanks to a last second touchdown. However, this dramatic finish did not come without some key plays that set it up.

The first quarter began and the atmosphere in the stadium was electric. The first quarter was all REV, as an interception and a touchdown gave them a 6-0 lead. However, just a couple plays into the second quarter, RHS answered, getting a touchdown of their own and converting the extra point to jump out to a 7-6 lead. The rest of the second quarter was a slug fest, as neither team's offense managed to make any real noise, and the two teams went into halftime separated by just a point.

After a halftime performance by REV’s band, the two teams took the field for the second half, ready to bring the Smudge Pot trophy home. The 3rd quarter began much like how all of the second quarter went, with both defenses staying strong and not giving up much yardage. Something had to give, and it did. REV’s running back Izaiah Holley took a pass from quarterback Nathen Lopez 46 yards to the end zone, and REV took a crucial 12-7 lead with two minutes to go in the 3rd quarter. But RHS’ offense was not about to roll over and accept defeat. The Terriers stormed down the field on a crucial drive that ultimately led to an 18 yard touchdown pass connection between QB Dawson Martinez and tight end Luke Butler. The ensuing 2 point conversion that would have stretched the lead to 3 failed, but RHS still had a 13-12 advantage with 11 minutes to go in the game.

REV would respond however, and in a big way. After a deep 40 yard pass, the Wildcats found themselves at the Terriers 4 yard line, and they took the lead moments later on a short pass. It was now 19-13, and the Terriers were down to their last life.

Things continued to look grim until Dawson Martinez and wide receiver Julien Scarbrough connected for a huge gain, and just like that the Terriers had life. A few plays later, the Terriers were just 1 yard away from a Smudgepot victory. They came out in, ironically, the wildcat formation, and running back A’mean Lockett pushed forward. He fumbled just before crossing the goal line, but defensive back Jayden Woods, who rarely plays offense, scooped it up in the end zone for the touchdown. Kicker Eric Napoletano converted the PAT, putting the Terriers up 1. Moments later, the Terriers swatted down REV’s last-second pass, and the Smudge Pot was coming home.

The win meant revenge for RHS after they lost to REV in heartbreaking fashion last year. It also earned the Terriers their first Citrus Belt League win of the season, and sealed the Wildcats' fate of last place in the league standings. Congratulations to Terrier football on their win, as they will look to repeat their performance next year and keep the Smudge Pot at Redlands High School.
